A new version of VitalSigns for IP for z/OS mainframe networks is available.

If you have not already done so, we strongly encourage you to migrate to VIP 7.1 to take advantage of these changes:

• An all-new Remote Application Monitor that uses a combination of connection awareness and TCP target probes to monitor the availability of remote TCP server applications with a minimum of overhead. Alerts are sent when applications are unreachable, unresponsive, or down. And a new Remote Applications at a Glance display provides an intuitive overview of application availability.
• Single sign-on support allows the VIP user to monitor multiple systems with a single sign-on to the VIP Server, even when those systems use different security databases.
• VIP Agents can now be grouped on VIP displays to allow the user to logically associate systems (for example, by sysplex) or to see only the systems of interest.
• TCP Client Monitoring allows the VIP user to monitor the use of client TCP applications from the z/OS host.
• Improvements to VIP Tools
  • Wrapping packet trace: The IP packet trace, whether initiated from the browser or in batch, will now write to a wrapping packet trace dataset.
  • Packet trace output can now be saved in an unformatted (IPCS) dataset from a batch IP packet trace job.
  • The Traceroute tool is enhanced, using tabs to make it easier to use.
  • The Ping tool now supports TCP probes, and will tell the user whether an application is listening on the target host and port.
  • The MVS System Operator Command tool is enhanced with the ability to remember a list of common commands pre-defined by the VIP administrator.
• Point-and-click hostname resolution on VIP at-a-glance and tool displays provides hostname substitution in most places where an IP address is displayed. Simply place the cursor on the IP address and click to resolve the hostname. In the IP packet trace tool, a single click will replace an IP address with the hostname throughout the entire trace.
• SMF exits are no longer needed due to VIP's increased use of the newer and more efficient Network Management Interface (NMI).
• A new TCP option on the Remote Hosts Monitor provides pro-active availability and response-time monitoring of remote TCP ports.
• An improved HPR Connections at a Glance display allows the user to split the display up to seven ways to monitor the top-n connections in each of several categories, such as number of path switches or ARB rate reductions.
• Many Reliability, Availability and Serviceability (RAS) enhancements have been added to the VIP Agent and Server.
• Several significant Server and Agent performance improvements have been made.
• The latest maintenance level, VIP 7.1.2, can list LU-LU sessions for HPR connections.
