Did You Know...
You Should Keep Backups of Your Administrator and Advisor Extracts?

Keeping backups of the Vanguard Administrator and Vanguard Advisor extracts the same way you keep backups of the RACF database helps you in the event that you lose a critical protection profile or if you need to forensically determine how something changed in your RACF database.  It is as simple as defining a backup GDG and adding a step to your daily extract to back up the VSAM file(s) to the GDG.  If, in an emergency, you need to rebuild resources, groups or userids, your task will be much easier if you can restore from an extract backup.

  • You deleted a userid on Wednesday;
  • The userid is not in the Thursday Administrator extract;
  • On Friday you find out the deleted userid needs to be recreated but the userid is no longer in your current Administrator extract or RACF database;
  • Use the saved copy of the Wednesday Administrator extract (or import the backup to a new Administrator VSAM cluster name);
  • Use Administrator; Server Reports; Userid Profile to select the userid and rebuild it (Fastpath VRA 3;1;1, Online, Enter Userid, Type RB command on the result row);
  • Use VRAEXEC or VRABATCH to execute the ADDUSER, ALTUSER, CO, PE commands;
  • You need to set a password if the userid is for a person;
  • The regenerated RACF commands recreate the userid.

SECURITY CAUTION: The Extract BACKUPs contain sensitive RACF data and should be protected accordingly and deleted after an appropriate interval.
